Willstrop takes out top seed as four Egyptians make the last eight
Then an even bigger upset followed as unseeded James Willstrop beat top seed and world #1 Mohamed Elshorbagy in four pulsating games to set up a semi against Rodriguez. Willstrop could easily have won in straight games as Shorbagy saved three match balls in the third, but one was enough in the fourth.
Two Egyptian victories followed as Omar Mosaad reached the quarter-finals for the first time with a tough four game win over Borja Golan, while defending champion Ramy Ashour also needed four games to get past his third successive Egyptian opponent, Karim Abdel Gawad.
Three time champion Nick Matthew reached his ninth straight World Champs quarterfinal, squeezing home in the first two games before finishing off Marwan Elshorbagy in three, and he’ll meet Tarek Momen, who made it four Egyptians in the last eight as he came from a game down to beat Gregoire Marche.
