Round Two of the World Champs, the round of 32, got under way at the Meydenbauer Center today in Bellevue with the top half of the draw.
The day started with an upset as Egypt’s Ali Farag despatched 13th seed Max Lee in straight games, swiftly followed by an upset five-game win by Karim Ali Fathi over fellow-Egyptian Fares Dessouki.
Order was restored as Mathieu Castagnet ended home hopes with a three-game win over qualifier Todd Harrity, and Simon Rosner maintained his unbeaten record against close friend Nicolas Mueller.
In the evening session fifth seed Miguel Rodriguez recovered from losing a marathon first game to beat Campbell Grayson in four games, then it was the turn of three World Champs finalists – Gregory Gaultier, James Willstrop and finally top seed Mohamed Elshorbagy – to progress in convincing fashion.
